Greene County softball suffered a 7-6 loss in its first game of the season to Prairie City-Monroe on Monday, May 22. Collins-Maxwell-Baxter handed the Rams another one-run loss on Wednesday, 1-0. Both the Mustangs and Raiders are expected to compete for the HOIAC title.
PCM 7 ~ Greene Co 6
The Greene County softball season began with a one-run loss to Heart of Iowa Activities Conference foe, PCM Mustangs. The final in Monroe was 7-6.
PCM scored in the first inning to lead 1-0 until the fourth when the Rams tied the game, 1-1. Greene County scored five runs in the fifth for a 6-1 lead, but the Mustangs added six to their tally in the sixth. The game ended with Greene County runners stranded at first and second bases. The Rams recorded one error.
Megan Durbin hit a line drive home run over the left field fence for the Rams, driving in three runs. She also added an infield single. Hannah Promes and Jenna Beyers also singled twice, while Tieryn Tucker and Samantha Hardaway each added a base hit. Durbin drove in four runs on the night.
Promes and Beyers split the pitching duties with Beyers taking the loss. She pitched two innings, giving up five runs on four hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Promes allowed two runs on six hits, fanning two.
CMB 1~Greene Co 0
The Rams lost in Collins to CMB May 24 again by one run, 1-0. The Raiders scored their only run on a pair of infield throwing errors in the first inning. Starting pitcher Promes and reliever Beyers held the Raiders to four hits and five walks. The Raiders left eight runners on base.
The Rams had eight hits, but struck out 13 times left 10 runners on base. The hits were scattered, and it wasn’t until the seventh inning that the Rams had runners on first and second with only one out. Strikeouts for the second and third outs ended the game.
Promes doubled and singled and Durbin had two base hits. Faith Davis, Izzy Bravard, Jenna Beyers, and Megan Carey each had a base hit. ~The Scranton Journal
